Dow Chemistry Classroom

Dow Chemistry Classroom

Dow Thailand Group in collaboration with the Chemical Society of Thailand under the patronage of Professor Dr. HRH Princess Chulaborn Walailak has set up the “Dow Chemistry Classroom” project. The project focuses on science teaching and learning especially those relating to chemistry laboratory to enhance teachers’ and students’ capacity through Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory (SSCL), a technique considered highly efficient and safe. Recognized internationally and by UNESCO, the technique has been applied for the first time by a private corporation in the Thai education system. Main activities of the project include providing workshop training on small-scale chemistry laboratory techniques to high school science teachers; monitoring and evaluating their teaching, organizing a contest on how the SSCL technique is applied in classroom and, finally, training role-model science teachers of Dow Chemistry Classroom. The main purpose is to develop trainers and teachers capable enough to disseminate this teaching technique in a wider scale. From its inception, more than 400 primary and secondary teachers from 176 schools nationwide attended the project and more than 30,000 students have benefited from the project.

Science & Technology Initiative and Sustainability Awards (STISA)

Dow Thailand Group together with SCG Chemicals, the Thai Institute of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry (TIChE), the Thailand Research Fund and National Innovation Agency established the Science & Technology Initiative and Sustainability Awards (STISA) in 2009. The project encourages students to think out of the box and come up with innovations based on scientific and technological methods. The idea is to promote creativity collaboration, environmental responsibility as well as establish enthusiasm and responsibility among students and professors of participating universities.

Vocational Chemical Engineering Practice College Project (V-ChEPC)
Vocational Chemical Engineering Practice College Project (V-ChEPC)

This is our collaboration with Petroleum Institute of Thailand and the Petrochemical Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) in which technical students are taught through the “Learn How to Learn” and “Learning by Doing” concepts in a 2-year curriculum. Since 2009, Dow Thailand Group has supported more than 6 million baht to the project. At present, seven batches of technical students have been graduated and 15 of them have become our employees. Dow Thailand Group’s staffs are guest lecturers to the project teaching factory operation from time to time.

Dow Thailand Group’s volunteers have organized the Fun with English and Science activities in the schools of Chachoengsao and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya provinces to inspire the students in science study and English language. The occasion also saw Dow people giving scholarships, sports equipment, stationery and learning media to those in need.

Ban Chang Development Plan

With its focus on community success, Dow Thailand Group has invited over 1,200 residents in 22 villages in 3 sub-districts of Ban Chang district, Rayong, to participate in the development of the ‘Ban Chang Development Plan’ designed to bring sustainable development to the community, and delivered to community representatives in June 2013. The plan identifies projects essential for the development of the area. So far, Dow has organized the following related key projects.

With an aim to uplift Rayong as Pilot Project for EF Happy and Safe City, Dow Thailand Group kicked off the “DOW-EF Development for Successful Youth and Rayong Happiness” project by forming a team of Change Agents from communities who help promote life immunization for children through Executive Functions (EF) known as cognitive control and supervisory attentional system which include analytical thinking and reasoning that form a fundamental character for learning, problem solving, sharing, and living happily throughout the course of one’s life.

Ban Chang Development Plan

Since 2014 Dow Thailand Group together with the National Science Museum (NSM) foresee the importance of having a mobile science activity since 2004 which can truly reach out to the youth and are determined to create constructive science activities for people in Rayong and nearby provinces, and to promote science learning in and outside the classrooms and spur innovation through science.

English Kids Fun
Ban Chang Development Plan

Focused on the learn-with-fun learning environment and practice, “English Kids Fun” project is a special English class continuously developed for children of 9-12 years of age in Rayong province in order to improve English competency in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Neighbor Care Project

Starting in 2014, Dow Thailand Group has established the socio- environmental project under the name of “Neighbor Care Project,” which offers an opportunity for Dow staff to propose projects that will improve community wellbeing and nourishing a relationship with the communities. So far more than 630 Dow volunteers have been participating in 16 activities under this project.

Dow Thailand Group supports goods and services provided by community or community enterprise since this means supporting the local economy. Community products were usually on sale at our plants when we organized corporate event.

Community Partnership Association (CPA)

Dow Thailand Group is one of the founding members of the “Community Partnership Association” group, which is Thailand’s first collaboration among five companies; namely, Dow Thailand Group, PTT, SCG, BLCP and Glow, who commit to resolve common problems within the industry and to turn their businesses into an eco industry through knowledge transfer, experience sharing and self-monitoring. The group has upgraded its status to the Community Partnership Association with a total of 16 companies as its members now. The goal is to allow industries and communities to live side-by-side in a sustainable manner. Hopefully, more businesses will join the association in the future and create a strong network of sustainable environmental management to realize the ultimate goal of transforming Rayong province into an eco industrial town.

Mobile Clinics
Community Partnership Association (CPA)

Mobile Clinics is a basic medical clinic that have been arranged for people in Map Ta Phut and Ban Chang communities. Staffed not only by general practitioners, each clinic provides patients with dental and medicine care.

Nurse Scholarship
Community Partnership Association (CPA)

Nurse Scholarship enables students enrolled in an undergraduate nursing programs to receive funding for tuition, fees and other educational costs in exchange for working at the hospitals in Rayong province upon graduation.

Rayong Education Expo
Community Partnership Association (CPA)

Rayong Education Expo has been annually programmed to include a balanced mix of career counseling with professionals and interactive Q & A Sessions and intensive workshops by experts and undergraduates. Rayong Education Expo entails a community of education enthusiasts who have been providing the young aspirants latest career avenues.

Dow Thailand Group has actively support tree-planting activities in the community and around the neighborhood as the project not only improves living quality with more green areas being expanded and enlarged green protection strips being established but it also raises environmental awareness among Dow’s people and local residents. During the past eight years, Dow has planted more than 55,000 trees. The planting activity is usually held on auspicious occasions such as on HRH the King’s and the Queen’s birthdays and on the World Environment Day.

As safety is Dow’s top priority, Dow volunteers have organized this project to raise safety awareness among school students and to improve basic infrastructure for schools in Dow’s neighborhood to establish a safe learning environment. This annual event has been held in 21 schools since 2008.

Adopt-A-School

Dow Thailand Group has joined hands with the American Chamber of Commerce to adopt schools in Rayong province with a purpose to improve basic infrastructure and school environment as well as to provide education support to students. For nine years, the program has enhanced science education with a supportive environment for more than 6,100 students.

Provide safe, clean drinking water to populations who currently lack access; preserve, clean up and reuse precious water resources through innovative solutions.

Thai Red Cross – Dow Clean Drinking Water for Remote Schools

Dow Thailand Group, together with Thai Red Cross’s Relief and Community Health Bureau, Dow Water & Process Solutions, Unitech Co., Ltd, and Water Net PLC., funded “Thai Red Cross - Dow Clean Drinking Water for Remote Schools” project to install drinking water filtration machines and implement an effective maintenance system for 50 remote schools nationwide. The project is led by Dow’s world-class water filtration technology with the aim to grant access to clean drinking water, reduce illness caused by unclean drinking water, and enhance learning potential for Thai children.

Water Purification Machine Fund

Dow companies have donated and installed 80 water purification machines in Rayong communities, which has enabled villages to operate and maintain these machines on their own and manage the income to benefit the community as a whole in a sustainable way. In additional, the company has set aside a budget for the maintenance of these water purification machines to ensure that the communities will always have clean drinking water.

International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)

International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)

Dow Thailand Group, Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (I-EA-T), Tourism Authority of Thailand, communities in the neighborhood and local businesses have joined hands to organize the International Coastal Cleanup Day in Map Ta Phut area since 2003. The activity not only helps save marine lives but also raise environmental awareness among community members to protect beaches and local coastline.

Dow Chemical for Sustainable Industry

Dow Chemical for Sustainable Industry

Since 2011, Dow Thailand Group together with Thailand Environment Institute Foundation; Department of Industrial Promotion, Ministry of Industry; and Thai-US Creative Partnership, have initiated a long-term project called “Dow Chemical for Sustainable Industry” in which the principle of lean management for environment is applied to enhance the industrial sector’s capacity to improve its environmental and safety standards resulting in the increase of efficiency of its management, production and profitability. The Dow Chemical for Sustainable Industry project won the 2014 Asian CSR Award in Environmental Excellence, presented by the Asian Institute of Management-Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr., Center for Corporate Social Responsibility (AIM-RVR CSR Center), marking the first award in this category for Thailand.

We also join community events on major occasions such as on National Children’s Day, Thai New Year Day, Buddhist Lent Day as well as at Kathin ceremony.

Community Advisory Panel (CAP)

Dow Thailand Group’s Community Advisory Panel (CAP) provides an important outside-in perspective on the environment, health and safety issues, as well as sustainability, for the company. CAP members include local government officials, community leaders, the media, and other community representatives. Currently, Dow Thailand Group has two CAPs. The first one, formed in 2010, is at the Asia Industrial Estate, and the other, formed in 2011, is at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate.

This activity is an informal meeting held to strengthen relationship between Dow Thailand Group and the community and as a forum to discuss Dow’s business operation as well as to listen to community advice. The activity was held with 52 communities in Ban Chang Sub-District Municipality, Muang Ban Chang Municipality, Pala Sub-District Municipality and Muang Map Ta Phut Municipality.

Site Visit and Open HouseWe open our house to welcome visitors from government agencies, community representatives, local schools, university students and the media who wish to tour our plants and take a look at our products, safety and environmental management system as well as social activities and community engagement. Other visits include those by accredited agencies to measure environmental quality.

Supporting the Prostheses Foundation for HRH Princess Mother

Supporting the Prostheses Foundation for HRH Princess Mother

Dow Thailand Group has supported the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. the Princess Mother since 1996 by providing financial supports and polyurethane products for the production of prosthetic legs. Dow also aims to improve the quality of life and safety of officers who work in the foundation in order to pursue the goals of creating a healthy and happy society, which is aligned with Dow’s business purpose that encourages its employees to create a positive impact to the overall society. In 2016, Dow Thailand Group, SCG Performance Chemicals Co., Ltd. and the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. the Princess Mother signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop the new model of prosthetic feet in Thailand which reduces the impact load and prevents discomfort and soreness during walking. With the collaboration of Dow’s expertise in creating innovative products from specialty elastomers are good impact modifiers that also contribute strength, toughness, and flexibility, and the expertise in innovative plastic product design of SCG Performances Chemicals, the new model of prosthetic feet will help uplift and empower the lives of the amputees.

Since 1997, Dow Thailand has been providing financial support to ‘Operation Smile’, a project that performs surgeries and post-operative care for children suffering from cleft palates. Since 2012, the company together with its partners and employees has donated 3 million bath to Operation Smile Thailand. The fund can finance 210 surgeries and post-operative care for Rayong children.

Natural Disaster Relief

Natural Disaster Relief

With humanity spirit, Dow and its employees always reach out to those who suffer from natural disasters with no hesitation. Like the flood in 2011 affecting people nationwide, Dow and its employees immediately prepared and distributed hundreds of relief bags to affected communities. To help the country recover the soonest, Dow directed its assistance to affected agricultural sector by providing rice seeds to the farmers to help them restart their farming. In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of natural disaster response, Dow Chemical donated a financial support of USD 500,000 or approximately 15 million Baht to the Thai Red Cross Society in 2012. The funds go to building two new ultra-filtration and reverse-osmosis system water purification mobile units using Dow technology to help the Thai Red Cross provide clean water to flood-affected communities, and towards aiding the Thai Red Cross' efforts in disaster preparedness and health and hygiene awareness programs.

In late 2013, Dow and its employees around world, including Thailand, offered aid to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which caused devastation to the Philippines’ central region. The immediate relief and long-term recovery consisted of cash and other tools and appliances worth over US$200,000 in total (or about 6 million baht).

Natural Disaster ReliefIn 2013, Dow Thailand offered help to flood victims in Prachinburi, giving away 400 survival bags worth over 150,000 baht as immediate relief. In addition, the Thai Red Cross Society also sent out the drinking water production units, which have been financed by Dow, to help 17,280 people produce 345,600 liters of water for drinking.
