Dow Thailand and Absolute Flexible partner to develop food packaging designed for recyclability

Bangkok, Thailand – October 31, 2023 – Dow Thailand Group, a leading global materials science company, and Absolute Flexible, a leading Thai packaging design and manufacturing company, have partnered to develop food packaging designed for recyclability for Thai exporters. The new packaging is designed to meet the growing consumer demand for packaging with key sustainability benefits in Europe.

Traditionally, food packaging bags used in Thailand are made from multiple materials, making them difficult to recycle. This does not meet the needs of customers in overseas markets, where consumers are increasingly concerned about packaging that enables recycling, especially in the United Kingdom and the European Union. The new food packaging bags are made from Dow's special grade of polyethylene, which has been certified by the Thai Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) as having a lower carbon footprint than the reference value. The bag also retains its excellent properties for protecting food products inside.

"Dow is a materials science company with a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability. We are committed to helping our customers succeed in the market and achieve their sustainability goals. We are delighted to partner with a leading packaging company like Absolute Flexible to help Thai brands stand out in the competitive global market by developing mono-material recyclable packaging enabled by Dow's expertise and special plastic pellets such as INNATE, DOWLEX, ELITE, and AFFINITY," said Ekkasit Lakkananithiphan, Commercial Director of Dow Thailand Group.

Peerapon Wongvorakul

"Absolute Flexible is committed to developing environmentally friendly packaging technologies and innovations. We are constantly developing sustainable packaging solutions that are growing in demand. We chose to partner with a global leader like Dow to help us produce packaging that meets our requirements from a single material. This makes it recyclable, has a lower carbon footprint, and can be produced using existing machinery. This is a solution that meets the needs of businesses that are committed to sustainability, especially those with customers in countries that are aiming to reduce carbon emissions and prioritize recycling," said Peerapon Wongvorakul, Executive of Absolute Flexible.

"The key features of food packaging designed for recyclability are that it is easy to form and still retains its properties for protecting food products from moisture and air. It is also designed to be transparent, which reduces the amount of ink used, making it easier to recycle," Wongvorakul added.

The new food packaging will be used to package Thai spices, chili paste, sauces, and other condiments for export to the United Kingdom. There are also plans to expand to other European countries and target large markets which concerned with carbon emissions and supply chain traceability.
