Dow and partners create 300 drop points to recover value from plastic waste in Bangkok

Bangkok – June 15, 2020 – This year on World Environment Day, Dow Thailand has joined forces with 18 leading plastic producers, converters, recycling manufacturers, brand owners, and retailers to launch the most comprehensive monolayer PE packaging film collection project in the country called “Magic Hands x Won by PPP Plastics”.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, presided over the ceremony to release a caravan of distinguished-looking recycle bins to bring back plastic waste for recycling.

The aim of the project is to encourage Thai people to separate plastic waste at source by creating drop points in public places. The project starts with collecting 12 familiar PE packaging film applications that we see in everyday life such as shopping bags, collation shrink film, bubble wrap and packaging for diapers.

In the initial phase, there will be around 300 drop point locations in department stores, supermarkets, gas stations and schools across Bangkok and nearby provinces. Another 200 drop point locations are expected by the end of this year.

“This 3-year project is a collaboration between stakeholders along the plastic value chain to recover value of from these materials and prevent them from entering the environment. Monolayer packaging film is only our first step. We will expand the collection to cover other types of plastics once the system and the recycling technology is ready” said Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President.

Last year, the Thai government announced a roadmap for managing plastic waste. One of the two targets set is to circulate 100% of the target plastic waste into the manufacturing stream by the end of 2027. Therefore the Magic hands x Won, meaning circulation in Thai, by PPP plastics can also help the government to achieve this goal.

Dow Thailand has been a significant driver of the project. It demonstrates our ambition to stop waste by improving waste segregation and collection through partnership.
