Dow joins forces with the Chemistry Society of Thailand and OBEC to develop Thai science teachers

In partnership with the Chemical Society of Thailand and the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), Dow Thailand has organized a "Small-Scale Chemistry Laboratory" online workshop under 'Dow Chemistry Classroom' which has been conducted for 8 consecutive years. The training aims to transfer safe, efficient and economical laboratory techniques to 200 teachers to make science classes more accessible to Thai children across the country and develop young scientists to drive the nation further. This year, role-model teachers from previous batches also share their engaging techniques through hands-on practice with a series of experiments in a 2-day online workshop.

Dow Thailand has emphasized tomorrow innovators' development. "Dow Chemistry Classroom" is designed primarily to enhance science teachers' capability through small-scale chemistry laboratory techniques. The techniques are praised for high efficiency and safety and are recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Notably, the small-scale experiments require a small amount of chemicals, thus limiting the chance of chemical contact and possible harm as well as less chemical waste after use. The experiment period is also shorter. Overall, the experiments promise higher safety than chemical experiments in general. Many students have gained a good attitude towards science study from the practical hands-on experience of the small-scale chemistry laboratory.

"We realize the difficulty in classroom management for teachers at present. Even under normal situations, access to chemicals and experiment kits is inadequate, especially for small schools in remote areas. Due to COVID-19, most schools must conduct classrooms online. As a result, studying science through typical experiments may not be convenient in practice," said Poranee Kongamornpinyo, Southeast Asia Corporate Affairs Director. “The small-scale chemistry laboratory helps teachers and students overcome the shortage of labs and experiment kits. Small daily-use items can also be modified and used in the small-scale lab. We conduct the online training to deliver the techniques to teachers nationwide so that they can apply to both classroom and online teaching."

Since 2013, the small-scale lab has been continuously promoted among teachers and students nationwide. To date, more than 1,000 schools in Thailand have participated in the training.
