Dow supports Pak Lat Community’s Recycle Market, bringing 4 tons of waste back to recycling

23 March 2023 - Samut Prakan - Dow Thailand Group has supported the organization of a recycling market under the initiative "Paklad Zero Waste", a project seeking to develop youth leaders and volunteers to raise awareness of the concept of 'waste as a valuable resource'. Moreover, the initiative aims to foster environmental stewardship through community participation in waste separation at the source, with the objective of eliminating waste in coastal communities and keeping waste out of the environment in a sustainable manner in accordance with the circular economy principle.

This recycling market has been held for the sixth time since 2021, in collaboration with Dow Thailand Group and Chulalongkorn University’s Environmental Research Institute to promote proper waste sorting at the source which assures ease of reuse and ethical disposal. Moreover, the initiative enables garbage trade between communities and local junk shops, generating additional income, behavioral changes, and promotion of feasible circular economy systems.

“Successfully managing the environment and waste in communities is a matter of starting from our own homes. Making a habit of managing our home’s cleanliness and proper disposal of waste leads to mirroring results on a community level. This requires a joint effort from each community member and a broader understanding of the value of different types of resources and how they can be used in a circular way. In just two years, the landscape in the community has improved dramatically. With dedicated efforts, other communities can follow in Paklad’s footsteps. It is easiest to begin by collectively separating food waste from recyclable waste. This simple notion can already reap a vast variety of benefits,” said Poranee Kongamornpinyo, Southeast Asia Corporate Affairs Director, Dow Thailand Group.

Residents of the Paklad area engaged in waste separation activities and sold 66 kilograms of recycled plastic gathered from their homes, 64 kilograms of glass bottles, 11 kilograms of scrap metal, and 63 kilograms of paper and boxes at the most recent recycling market. In addition, the people of Paklad are able to transfer recyclable waste and other forms of waste to appropriate recycling procedures as well as close waste leakage routes from the environment owing to the organization of the 6 recycling markets. Moreover, they can maximize the efficiency of 4 tons of these resources using the circular economy principle. This aided in inspiring Paklad's community to recognize the value of waste and generate income from previously deemed useless plastics and resources. As a result, the Paklad area has become notably cleaner and more orderly.
