Dow Thailand is #PullingOurWeight collecting 6.5 tons of waste on 2022 International Coastal Cleanup Day

THAILAND - September 19, 2022 - Dow Thailand Group and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, private sector, and like-minded organizations organized a "#PullingOurWeight" beach cleanup activity on International Coastal Cleanup Day in Rayong Province, Thailand, on 17 September 2022. The event has been held in the country every September for twenty consecutive years to stop plastic waste from entering the environment and create awareness about waste sorting at the source.

Dow Thailand joined forces with over 3,300 volunteers to pick up more than 6,500 kilograms of garbage around the coastal area and put recycling wastes to use in alignment with the circular economy principle. According to our sustainability target, the activity is a part of encouraging one million tons of plastic waste to be reused and recycled by 2030.

This year, the Thai team and partners collected coastal garbage over the length of more than twenty-five kilometers of Nam Rin Beach, Phayun Beach, Phla Beach in Ban Chang district, and Suchada Beach, Saengchan Beach, Laemchareon Beach, Mae Ramphueng and Beach in Mueng district, Rayong province, Thailand. These are important tourist attraction areas in the region.

"Dow aims to build a sustainable society and community, especially to "stop plastic waste" and prevent it from entering the environment. Today's campaign is intended not only to temporarily bring back beautiful nature but—most importantly—to make the volunteers see how garbage ends up in coastal areas, have their first-hand experience with the waste in nature, and have the self-determination to go back and sort waste from the source. This will lead to sustainable solutions for marine debris," said Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President.

There were also booths and exhibitions to educate the participants. The campaign "Dow's separate and exchange bags" allows people to bring 125 pieces of polyethylene plastic bags to redeem a Dow 125th year's ocean bag at the event. More than 8,000 used plastic bags were collected and sent to a local school to be sorted and sold to a recycling factory.

Dow Thailand held an educational exhibition on innovative recyclable and recycled packaging. There were also showcases of how to create value from hard-to-recycle plastics, for example, plastic roads, paving bricks, artificial wood composite pallets for logistic use, flower pots, etc.

"As a Rayong citizen, I am proud to see companies, organizations, and volunteers collecting coastal waste together and bringing back the beauty of the beach, which is particularly important for us. Marine debris can be solved if we prevent them from the beginning by separating recycling waste from the food waste we generate at home — making it convenient for the responsible government bodies to handle them," Added Ruengrit Prakobtham, Ban Chang District Chief.

Media and national TV stations, such as Channel 3, were invited to spread the news nationwide.
