Dow Thailand volunteers plant from home >7,000 trees amidst the COVID-19 outbreak

Rayong – 23 June 2021 – Despite being in the “Work from Home” stage, Dow Thailand Group implemented a campaign for remote tree planting under the “Dow & Thailand Mangrove Alliance” project in early June 2021. The campaign encouraged employees and stakeholders to plant trees at home and send a photo of them with the new trees to Public Affairs team on the LINE chat application during the week of the World Environment Day. For each and every tree planted, Dow sponsored the Prasae community to grow one more mangrove tree at Prasae mangrove forest, Rayong province, where Dow has been planting trees for more than 13 years.

224 Dow volunteers participated in planting 3,523 trees at their premises, and the company doubled the amount. As a result, more than 7,000 trees were planted for carbon sequestration addressing Dow’s new sustainability target to protect the climate.

“At Dow Thailand, the pandemic is not the excuse to stop nature conservation. With the COVID-19 situation and strict preventive measures, we may need to take a slower walk. But we will not stop walking towards our sustainable future,” concluded Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President.

Dow’s 2025 Sustainability Targets are to protect the climate, stop plastic waste and close the recycling loop. In 2020, Dow Thailand, in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has founded the “Dow & Thailand Mangrove Alliance” to advance the conservation of mangroves along the coast of Thailand. A pilot project will be conducted in the Paknam Prasae sub-district, Rayong Province, before expanding to four other provinces on over 5,000 rai of land according to the 5-year plan (2020-2024). The key objectives are to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate plastic marine debris. The holistic project will take mangrove conservation to the next level and engage the public and private sectors as well as the surrounding communities. Networks for the restoration and preservation of mangroves will be set up to ensure balanced benefits among the environment, the economy, and society.
