Dow Thailand wins Platinum Level CSR Excellence Award and Ambassador’s Award from the American Chamber of Commerce

BANGKOK – 19 November 2021 –
Dow Thailand was recently awarded the "Platinum Level" Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence Award and the "Ambassador’s Award: Thai-US partnership in Technological Advancement for a Low-Carbon Future" from the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) during the 2021 CSR Excellence award ceremony. Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President, together with Poranee Kongamornpinyo, Southeast Asia Corporate Affairs Leader, received the award from Michael Heath, U.S. embassy Chargé d'Affaires.

Dow transfers low-carbon technologies from the US to Thailand by introducing sustainable innovations through our materials science expertise and collaboration with partners. The following are our flagship programs to support technological advancement for the low carbon future we are implementing in Thailand, leading to 3,500 tons of CO2 reduction, 300 tons of materials reduction, 23 tons of plastic waste usage and 10% energy conservation for 60 SMEs.

  • Customer packaging transformation: We have introduced innovative packaging technology from the US to Thai customers to help them reduced CO2 emissions and energy usage. The packaging is made from a newly invented polyethylene resin called "INNATETM”. It makes the new bags thinner but stronger, more durable, and easier to be recycled. The INNATETM resin imported from the US enables packaging bags to consume less plastics and lowers the energy used in the bag sealing process. It can be used to produce refillable bags, stand-up bags, rice bags, and heavy-duty industrial bags.
  • Promoting IoT among Plastic and Food SMEs: We support the use of big data, semi-automation, sensors and Internet of things among small and medium enterprises in Thailand. Since 2011, Dow has joined hands with experts from the Department of Industrial Promotion, Ministry of Industry, Plastics Institute of Thailand, National Research Council of Thailand, Thammasat University, and Kasetsart University in a collaboration to support SMEs to improve their efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness with free in-depth consultation from experts, free Industrial 4.0 manual and sharing Dow's operational excellent practices. The participated factories can lower their CO2 emissions and waste while improving their productivity. The program has reduced more than 2.4 million kilograms of carbon dioxide, an equivalent of planting 240K trees per year.
  • Recycled plastic road: It is a Plastic Upcycling Solution that Dow has implemented in many countries, including the United States, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The University of Missouri in the US and AEPW or Alliance to End Plastic Waste are also our partners. It is a new road paving approach utilizing asphalt mixed with plastic waste. A 1-kilometer-long recycled plastic road used approximately 3 tons of plastic waste, equal to nearly 900K plastic bags. So far, Dow and our partners in Thailand have diverted more than 50 million bags from landfills. Not only upcycles the waste, but the plastic road also improves durability and prolongs the service life of the road, saving maintenance resources and budget.

"As a US-based company with a long relationship with Thailand, where our largest manufacturing base in the Asia Pacific is located, we are pleased that Dow's sustainable technology and innovations are well-received and positively impact our local partners and stakeholders. I would like to thank Dow colleagues who contributed to the partnership on low-carbon technology and our Thai partners who work hand in hand with us to deliver a better future. The journey towards the carbon-neutral world is long, and we will not be able to walk that far alone. Whether we are Americans or Thais, we share the planet, we share the climate, and we share the future. Let’s continue working together for a lower-carbon world," said Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President.

The CSR Excellence Recognition award ceremony is organized every year by the AMCHAM to honor members who lead by example in corporate social responsibility practices. This year, Dow Thailand took home the CSR Excellence Award for the 11th consecutive year from our ongoing employee engagement for positive impacts as well as continuous efforts to advance sustainable solutions, build inclusive communities and develop tomorrow’s innovators. The special "Ambassador’s Award" is to honor an organization with outstanding Thai-US partnerships in Technological Advancement for a Low-Carbon Future.
