IRPC partners with DOW to save 30% energy in its refineries (ARU); Recognized by Thailand Energy Award 2020

BANGKOK – 6 July 2021 - IRPC Public Company Limited, the first fully integrated petrochemical industry operator in Southeast Asia, achieved a 30% reduction in steam power consumption and approximately 20% CO2 emissions reductions in IRPC refineries (ARU) by switching to UCARSOL™ synthetic amine, a product of Dow Thailand Group (Dow). The project recently won the creative energy award from Thailand Energy Award 2020, held by the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency.

This process provides both economic and environmental benefits without changing machines or investing in additional construction, while also not affecting current working conditions. It helps to reduce energy costs approximately 40 million baht per year and is very efficient as the remaining steam power can be used for other projects. It also saves approximately 385 million baht in factory expansion costs.

Environmentally, this reduces energy consumption by approximately 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20%, or equivalent to 4,382 tons of CO2 per year (438,200 trees planted per year). The facility was previously certified as an Eco Factory by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and certified for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by the Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO).

Mr. Samakkee Pankaew, manager of the refinery efficiency division, IRPC Public Company Limited, said, “This project is in line with IRPC's policy that emphasizes sustainable management by striving to build strength in the future, demonstrating awareness of IRPC’s responsibility as part of the global society and the nation. IRPC is committed to doing good business. It considers the impact on the environment, community, and society, and always meets the expectations of all stakeholders in a balanced way. This project can help reduce the amount of steam used in the production process and reduce the environmental impact beyond initial projection expectations, with positive effects for business and the environment in Thailand. In addition, Dow's UCARSOL™ has low corrosion values. As a result, machinery and equipment wear less and there is an opportunity to save on maintenance budgets in the future. It is also more efficient in capturing hydrogen sulfide caused by production, reducing it from 250 parts per million to only 40 parts per million, which has a positive effect on the air quality in the factory."

“Dow is delighted that the project with IRPC has been so successful that it has received such a prestigious award. We are proud that our UCARSOL™ products have helped IRPC achieve energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. This is in line with Dow's vision to be the world's number one materials science company in innovation for sustainability,” said Mr. Wichan Tangkiangsirisin, Sales Director Asia Region, Dow Thailand Group.
