Lion joins hands with Dow and SCGC to launch recyclable refill bags

BANGKOK – 14 September 2022 – Lion (Thailand) has launched a Shokubutsu Monogatari recyclable refill bag enabled by Dow’s innovative INNATE™ TF Polyethylene Resins for Tenter Frame Biaxial Orientation (TF-BOPE). Leveraging the expertise of Dow Thailand Group as well as the unique collaboration platform provided by Dow’s Pack Studios Singapore, SCGC and a flexible packaging manufacturer, Lion successfully developed 200-ml and 500-ml shower cream bags to be recyclable to advance the circular economy in Thailand and grow awareness of environmental issues among consumers. The partnership demonstrates a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enables recycling while maintaining the same quality as conventional materials.

"Lion has always been committed to developing sustainable products and packaging. This is in line with the needs of consumers more interested in environmentally friendly products. The recyclable refill bags for Shokubutsu Monogatari shower creams are one example of eco-friendly packaging that helps meet the circular economy through collaboration from business alliances, the innovation of Dow's plastic resins, and the support from SCGC. This made it possible to develop Lion Thailand's first recyclable refill bag while maintaining the product's original quality inside the package. It also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions concretely and perfectly promotes the recycling cycle," said Somsak Srisaardrak, SPC Business Executive Manager of Lion (Thailand).

"Recently, refill bags have become widely popular due to the awareness of the need to reduce plastic and carbon dioxide emissions, as refill bags have smaller carbon footprints than rigid packaging. However, due to stringent technical requirements, traditional refill bags are made of film laminated with multiple kinds of plastics. Dow's INNATE™ TF-BOPE has durable material properties, offering high toughness and excellent optics for stand-up shelf appeal and touch and feel, allowing the development of a high-performance all-PE structure that is easily recycled. We would like to thank Lion, whose concern for the environment led to the use of Dow's solution to develop the easy-to-recycle refill bag," said Supot Katetopragran, Commercial Director of Dow Thailand Group.

"SCGC, Dow, and Lion share the same vision for sustainable growth. This collaboration will enable packaging development to meet the circular economy more efficiently. SCGC provides business partners with a comprehensive solution that addresses every process, from the development of plastic resin innovation to design services, cutting-edge plastics selection suitable for the structure of the film in each layer of the packaging, and coordination with manufacturers to ensure that the packaging can easily enter the recycling process while still responding to the use of the product and the quality as specified by the brand owners," added Tanawong Areeratchakul, CEO and President of SCG Chemicals (SCGC).

The recyclable Shokubutsu Monogatari shower cream refill bag will gradually replace the old bag and is now available in department stores and supermarkets nationwide. You can put it in a regular recycling bin after use.
