SC Asset becomes the first Thai real estate developer which co-creates with SCG and Dow to innovate recycled plastic road based on circular economy to promote sustainable environment

Rayong - December 10, 2018 - Mr. Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, Chief Executive Officer of SC Asset Corporation PCL (SC), revealed the cooperation and memorandum of understanding between the company and two leaders in plastic innovation. He said, “SC is determined to drive sustainable business in three dimensions, namely, economy, society and environment, which is an important element to manage resources and leave as small an environmental footprint as possible. Therefore, the “co-create” project among the three parties, namely, SC Asset, SCG and Dow Thailand is formed to invent sustainable innovation based on the “circular economy” concept. Recycled plastic road project is developed by incorporating recycle process to reuse plastic waste. SC Asset is the first to introduce smart road project to real estate business landscape in Thailand. The effort does not only strengthen road surface but also engage our customers in the campaign to reduce plastic pollution”.

Mr. Sakchai Patiparnpreechavud, Vice President Polyolefins and Vinyl Business, SCG Chemicals Co., Ltd., said, “SCG has incorporated circular economy in business operation by attaching priority on maximizing the usage of natural resources to create the sustainable environment, society and the community. SCG is ready to be the driver to support the cooperative network including every party from both local and overseas. SCG organized SD Symposium, the world-class seminar in Thailand, and being an active participant with strong determination to promote recycled plastic road surface to add value through tangible application of technology in residential projects. This is the model for comprehensive development with admirable participation from urban households.”

Mr. Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, President of Dow Thailand Group, said, “Plastic waste is a global issue that Dow is determined to work with all parties to find a practical and scientific solution to address the problem in a sustainable manner. Asphalt road made of recycled plastic is a smart solution to create value to plastic waste and improve road performance. Dow has earlier initiated a project to build recycled plastic roads in India and Indonesia, covering over 40 kilometers. Through the tripartite cooperation, the project will become a catalyst to promote the circular economy for plastic in Thailand which will serve as a guideline to reduce plastic waste discharge into the sea in a concrete manner.”

Recycled plastic road is one of the innovations under the concept of a circular economy. The technical cooperation between SCG and Dow Thailand will create value for plastic waste. By mixing about 8-10 percent of plastic waste with asphalt to pave the road surface, the smart road will become stronger and more resistant to erosion. A finding by Department of Civil Engineering, Chulalongkorn University shows that asphalt road containing recycled plastic is 15-33 percent stronger and more durable.
